Nestled in the center of Orleans Village on Cape Cod by the historic Orleans Cardinals’ baseball field and the public tennis courts, Young & Fancy Signs has been a growing homespun business since 1996. In the Cape tradition of family businesses, Young & Fancy Signs is a local shop run by locals who care about preserving their trade as well as their town.
Dawn and Susan, the shops namesakes, co-owners and co-founders apprenticed with local friend and mentor, Fred Jones formerly of Sun Signs located in the neighboring village of Eastham. Jones taught this artistic duo the fundamentals of old fashioned carving techniques. Gauging elegant numbers, letters and graphics into the soft smooth surface of sugar pine quarterboards, and slathering on silky coats of shiny enamel delicately outlined in 23 karat gold leaf came naturally to Dawn and Susan. While it wasn’t long before they opened their own place, their first sign still hangs over the entrance to the back door of their shop, a constant reminder of the jolly mentor who passed on the legacy of his trade.
Today, Young & Fancy Signs uses modernized materials while keeping the historical integrity of yesteryear’s carving front and center in their techniques. The shop is a full service graphic imaging firm that can design a logo or brand your product and take the project to completion by producing the custom signage your home or business requires.
The carvers use extira, a treated composite that is impenetrable to water and insects in addition to the sugar pine and mahogany that was used to demark the merchant ships and fishing boats in old Rock Harbor. Only the best quality paints are used, and on painted signs the edges are epoxied to further seal the signs against moisture. The shop has also expanded to provide high performance vinyl lettering and graphics for boat lettering, truck lettering and window displays.
